Chapter 16

Whole

Cass is barely gone when Connor’s truck lurches to a halt, the door opening and closing before the engine has stopped turning. “Harper!” he calls from the porch, taking the steps in an audible leap. When he appears in the doorway, his face is gaunt and afraid in a way I can’t recall ever seeing before. His eyes, bloodshot and exhausted, light on me and he lunges forward, pulling me to my feet. “Harper!” For perhaps only the second time I can remember in all our years together, Connor hugs me fiercely. “You’re safe,” he says, his voice cracking. “I thought you were dead. I honestly thought I’d lost you, Harper.”

I can feel the wild beat of his blood, the savage wolf in him electric against my skin. As with Tate and Cass, I see Connor in a different way than before. I feel the conflict in his soul, the twin lives he leads, the pull of the wolf and the heart of the man, entwined and vital but tearing him apart. Amid them I feel love. And fear.

That is the light and dark that lives in us all, I think abstractedly as I stand in my brother’s embrace. In everyone I feel that conflict, expressed in different ways. Fear. And love.

“I’m fine, Connor.” I step back, holding his hands. “I’m not hurt.”

His eyes narrow slightly as he looks at me. “But you’re changed.”

“Yes.” I don’t look away, and I don’t deny it. “I am.”

“How?”

“I don’t understand yet. But it’s okay, Connor. I’m okay.”

The wolf part of him hears and understands, but the man in him looks around, frowning. “Where is Cass?”

Tate stands up, glancing at me. “Cass left, Connor. She went back over the river.”

What color is left drains from Connor’s face. “I told Avery to tell her not to go. Remy has lost control of the wolves. If they so much as catch Cass’s scent, she’ll be dead.”

“She knows the risks.” Tate’s face is grave. “Cass is strong, Connor. Full of Harper’s blood. She may not be so vulnerable as you think.”

But Connor is shaking his head. “She can’t stand against Keziah and the wolves,” he says shortly. “Not without Antoine.” Then he glances at me guiltily, and I try not to react.

“You don’t know Antoine is dead.” I’m proud of how steady my voice is.

Connor holds my eyes but doesn’t answer.

“What about Jeremiah?” Callie holds up her phone. “I’ve called him a dozen times. He’s not picking up. And he’s the only one over there without supernatural powers.”

“I don’t know, Callie.” I think it’s the first time I’ve heard Connor use her name or address her directly without any hint of anger in his voice. “I didn’t see Jeremiah. I’m sorry.”

He turns back to Tate. “What did Cass say? How was she?”

Between us, Tate and I try to explain what’s happened to Cass. “She’s herself again,” I say eventually. “I’m not certain for how long, and neither is she. But for now, she’s stronger even than Keziah.
